Closet Clean-Up ... Care

Our wardrobe is our friend and like a good friend, should be treated special. How do you give your clothing and accessories T.L.C. so that they will service you for many seasons?

• For wash day, separate your clothing by color and weight - all pure whites, lights, darks, towels and any heavier garments such as jeans and sweats.

• Closing zippers helps keep zipper teeth from rubbing against other clothing, minimizing damage during the wash cycle.

• Wash all delicates (or Velcro items) in a net lingerie bag. Hang to dry. Avoid the dryer as the spandex in stretch fabrics and elastics will deteriorate from the heat.

• Turn sweaters inside out to avoid excess pilling. De-fuzz with a sweater shaver.

• Wash 100% cotton in cold water and dry on low heat to minimize shrinking.

• Pre-spot any stains and wash immediately.

• Rinse your swimsuit in cool tap water after every use. Chlorine and salt water eat away at materials and elastics, shortening the life of your suit. Hang to dry.

• Invest in a lint brush for a clean sweep before you leave the house.

• Wipe down and polish shoes regularly, resoling heels when necessary. Beat up shoes can downplay an outfit.

• Replace all garments when they show signs of wear.

• Repair any sagging hemlines and replace buttons promptly.

• Dry clean woolens, linens and specialty garments at the end of the wearing season.

• Hand wash silk blouses and sweaters with a gentle soap such as Woolite. Wrap in a towel to remove excess water (do not wring or twist). Lay flat and reshape to dry.

• Recycle gently worn clothing to consignment shops such as Worth Another Look in Langhorne, PA (215-752-0102).
