Black has always been known to be chic and slimming, but sometimes “head-to-toe” black can be boring.  Here’s how to add pizzazz to basic black:

  • Add color – Creating a column of color (top & bottom) in black helps you look taller and trimmer.  Then POP it with a bright color jacket or sweater.

  • Wear white – A white blouse with black pants is just plain smart especially with details such as ruffles or pintucks.  Be sure to select the “white” that is most flattering to your skin tone (cool skin tones wear bright white, warm skin tones wear ivory).

  • Insert a print – Any lively print will mix up the outfit and break apart the black.  Chose a timeless polka dot, a traditional equestrian scene or modern geometric.

Vests are in again.  Layer a vest over a t-shirt with jeans for a casual look or wear a black vest over a white ruffled blouse with a pencil skirt for instant wear-to-work.

Skip the embellished and holiday themed vests (you know the one with the embroidered pumpkins hiding in the back of your closet).  Vest styles have been tweaked for a fresh, modern look.

Or choose a “2fer” style – one garment with the look of two. They consist of a shirt/vest combo or shirt/sweater combo that is sewn together.

Femininity has a hint of retro with dresses, ruffled blouses, slim and full skirts.  Denim is a favored fabric not only in boot cut and skinny jeans but dressed up in jackets and dresses too.

Cardigans are borrowed from grandfather’s closet in long silhouettes with roomy pockets and self tie belts.  A cardigan is a great cover up over a dress on a crisp autumn day when a coat is too heavy for that in-between weather.

QuestionFashion Question:

I'm confused about where to go shopping.  How do I know what stores are right for me?

The question isn’t where to shop but where NOT to shop. I consistently witness two sides - middle aged women shopping in the junior department OR finding matronly clothing in a younger client’s closet.

Where to shop depends upon your age, body type, personality type, lifestyle (as to what kinds of clothing needs you have based on your life) and budget. First determine what kind of clothing you are looking for (work or casual), then look at the type of clothes that each store features. Does it appeal to you? Does it meet the above criteria?

Here are some general guidelines for stores/brands to try:

Teens to 20’s – junior departments at major stores; specialty stores such as Hollister, Abercrombie, Forever 21 (the name is a great clue), Deb Shops; and national brands such as XOXO, Rampage, Roxy and Byer; American Rag (Macy’s brand).

20’s - 30’s – New York & Co., The Limited, Express, Aeropostale, Merona (Target), I.N.C. (Macy’s), Lucky, Guess, Buffalo

30’s - 40’s – stores such as A. Taylor, A. Taylor Loft, Talbot’s; brands such as Nine West, BCBG, Sunny Leigh, Apt. 9 & Daisy Fuentes (Kohl’s), I.N.C. (Macy’s), Style & co. (Macy’s), Cherokee (Target)

40’s - 50’s – brands such as Jones New York, Liz Claiborne, Ralph Lauren, Eddie Bauer, Lands’ End, DKNY, Tahari, I.N.C. (Macy’s), Style & co. (Macy’s), Context (Lord & Taylor), Cherokee (Target)

50’s, 60’s up to senior set – Liz Claiborne, Jones New York, Ralph Lauren, JM Collections (Macy’s), Worthington (J.C. Penney), Sag Harbor, Briggs, Alfred Dunner

Success Stories

Wardrobe Woe:  Kristin, who is a medical writer, works from home, but meets clients and makes presentations outside the office. She needed a business casual wardrobe.

She wasn’t happy with the majority of her wardrobe and wanted clothing that would present her in the best way. She’s a busy wife and mother of two small children. Her husband referred to her clothing as “nana clothes.”

"I would like to find the wardrobe that is most flattering for my body type and cut down the unused clothes in my closet. I want fun outfits for going out that look sharp," said Kristin.

The Fashion Fix:  Kristin needed an immediate update to her wardrobe (both career and casual) – one that would show off her great smile, curly hair and high cheekbones.

Kristin’s closet contained dated, matronly items such as oversized sweaters from the eighties. Armed with a shopping list to revitalize Kristin’s wardrobe, she also wanted me to find her a new outfit for her milestone birthday party coming up.

On our shopping trip Kristin went home with twenty-one items – twelve shirts/sweaters, six pairs of pants, one suit (jacket/pants) and one dress for a sum of $521.

The Testimonial:  “I really enjoyed the shopping experience with Paula. Paula did all the work running back and forth finding different clothing in various sizes, styles, and colors for me to try on. Paula also provided an objective opinion on how the clothing looked. This was especially helpful for me because it usually takes me a long time to make decisions. I felt very confident in my new outfit (for my 40th birthday party) and I got a lot of compliments (such as “glowing”). I guess this was just my confidence and good feelings showing through. The whole consultation and shopping experience for me was very valuable. Now when I shop, I know what types of clothing and colors to look for. I am able to find them in a short time. I know that they look good on me and I feel good wearing them. I am very glad that I called Paula!”
