Trends

The look ahead falls back on yesteryear with a return to classic styling.  Pencil skirts, fitted jackets, cardigans, shirt dresses and argyle sweaters are reminiscent of Hitchcock films.  Feminine charm prevails with lacey looks from grandmother’s closet, tailored suits, ruffles and soft bow blouses inspired by the ladies who lunch.  The once nerdy staples from the preppy set are now considered chic.

People are dressing up more for work with a desire to wear dresses.  The standard knit wrap dress that Diane vonFurstenberg (www.dvf.com) made famous in the 70’s has made a comeback.  Many dress vendors, such as Nine West, have reasonably priced versions.

Layering and mixing, such as blouses with sweaters, are an important trend.  Classic pieces like khakis are more feminine and pulled together.

“It’s an interesting season, certainly more classic and pulled together,” said designer Tracy Reese.  “It was less about items and more about how all the pieces work together for a complete look” (Women’s Wear Daily, 2/23/06).

Influences from the eighties have returned with fullness on the top above a thinner bottom.  Longer sweaters are paired with skinny pants. This look is not for everyone – it depends on the body shape – it’s all about balancing the body shape.

Kick up your heels in red shoes.  Rich burgundy patent leather is a show stopper in flattering Mary Jane ankle straps or classic pumps.

Outerwear is an outfit too.  Accessorize your winter coat with a complimentary scarf, gloves and hat.  A bright color muffler chases the winter blues away when worn with a black, navy or grey coat.  Orange, chocolate or sage are sophisticated with camel or brown coats.

Office Etiquette

Create the right impression by matching the appropriate style of outerwear to your office attire.  A ski jacket over a business suit sends a confusing message – are you off to work or going skiing?

David Wolfe, creative director at the Donegar Group, a fashion trend forecasting company stated, “A more sophisticated, age-appropriate way of dressing will prevail and replace the sexier, more flesh-exposed look” (Women’s Wear Daily, 7/27/05).

Handbags are super sized with feminine touches such as lace.  Legs are in the spotlight with opaque tights and textured stockings.  Chains, pearls and pendants are combined, layered over sweaters and blouses.

The color purple (plum, lavender) is mixed with pink, red or green.  Rich shades of blue are important, such as teal and aquamarine.   Grey is a great color choice for accessories and complements blue or red.  Neutrals colors of camel, ivory, oatmeal or brown look new, especially when combined with a touch of metallic.

Fashion Question - How do I select the right winter coat?

QuestionEvery wardrobe needs a variety of outerwear to complement the outfit and occasion.  What kind of coat you need depends upon your wardrobe and lifestyle.  Knee length wool coats give a professional edge to career or dress clothes.  Sporty, casual clothing means a parka, anorak or barn jacket (for jeans or khaki pants). Hoods generally denote a sportier look.  Some coat styles offer detachable hoods that make a coat more versatile.

If you don’t want to replace your coat every five years, opt for classic colors and traditional styles.  A pea coat or toggle coat can serve double duty over casual or work attire.  Black, navy, gray and camel will give you longevity.  Casual jackets are fun in bright colors such as red, royal or purple.
